Deaf Culture

Being deaf is sure hard, not hearing all the things that you want is frustrating. One cause of deafness is hereditary. A deaf person may have the chance that his or her child could also be deaf. The tendency of this is that deaf people will join deaf communities and learn about deaf culture.

There are many deaf communities around that follow a deaf culture all around the globe. Deaf Culture is the belief or thinking that being unable to hear is not a disability, but it is only their difference which distinguishes on other people. It is the culture, the beliefs, the behaviors and values existing between communities or institutions which have people whom are deaf. Members of this community may include deaf people and the sign-language interpreters.

They use sign language as their medium of communication. People who can’t hear should be treated equally just like with other normal people. In their community, these deaf people always keep on updating to each other what is happening in their environment every now and then. They have also their own rules and regulations in their community including setting etiquette and some other manners for them to know and for you to know if a person is polite.

They have also different mode of dress, different way of worshipping, has their own separate school and other cultures that makes them distinct to any ordinary people. They have their own distinct cuisine. They don’t have any food that is commonly found in certain events or holidays. For example, they don’t have a food for their own custom or for their thanksgiving. Deaf people just eat what their other members eat and also the common and popular cuisines of the Americans. They can devise and make their own cuisines. They celebrate the events in the history deaf. Their main celebration is the founding of Gallaudet University by Laurent Clerc. They also celebrate his birthday as to give importance to him. The way they dress is also different.

We all know that the way a person dresses speaks what his or her personality. Deaf people can wear anything they want as accordance with their taste. They also wear their “Deaf Pride” or their shirt with the theme of ASL and badges as proudly proclaiming their individuality to the world. They have no deaf religion. There don’t have their Deaf God and no liturgy. They have the same religion or liturgies as with the people whoncan hear.

Deaf identity crosses or meets with other kind of cultures. This may cross with the education, other beliefs, class and other things. This makes this culture to be small is continually growing. Deaf communities always promote that deaf people should not be discriminated. In deaf culture, deafness (spelled with small d) and Deafness (spelled in upper case D) has different meanings. The word deafness, written in lower case d, means the inability to hear of a person while the word Deafness, written in upper case D), means the cultural membership that exists between the members of the group of people who is impaired in hearing and they use sign language to communicate with each other.

Sign language is used by the people in the deaf culture to communicate with other people. There are many kinds of sign language and may vary from different countries. Deaf culture helps a deaf individual to realize things in life, that even though they cannot hear, they should develop within themselves that being deaf is not a thing to be ashamed of or a disability and gain less confidence, but a reason to let them feel that they are special in this world and have their own missions. They should develop a good attitude.
